I downloaded audacity and tried recording my voice by talking in a mic. I can hear myself on the speakers but I can't record.

I tried all of these things:

Why can?t I hear what I?m recording?
Windows and Linux

To monitor your recording, open your computer's volume control panel. Turn up the playback volume and turn off the ?mute? checkbox for your recording source (usually ?microphone? or ?line in?).

If this does not work, open the Audacity preferences. In the ?Audio I/O? section, turn on the ?Software Playthrough? option.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=recording&i=playthrough

What am I doing wrong.

And yes, I hit the record button. Audacity can play files just fine, it just won't record what I am saying on the mic. Again, I can hear myself on the speakers when I am talking.

All I want to do is record an hour long conversation. How do I do it?

Unsure if you've tried this or not - at the top of the toolbar, there are two sliders. The one on the left determines output volume, the right, input. Make sure the second slider is set to the far right. In the nearby drop-down box, make sure you select the correct input source. If you're unsure which is the correct input, go back to your volume manager, speak into the microphone, and observe which of the inputs shows a response (probably Line In or Microphone).
