Hello,
I'm having a problem rebooting after doing a system restore on Windows XP Home Editon and I've come to the mountain top for help. The original problem started with McAffee Professional 7.0. I had it installed for a while and had no problems with it. Lately, I've been getting an error message saying one of the files within the software was missing. I tried a clean install and the same error message came up. I don't believe it to be virus related.
I figured I would try a restore to a previous week when it was functioning correctly and when the PC booted up after the restore, it went back to reboot itself again, then went to the screen that gives you the option to boot up in the safe mode. I then restored to another previous week and got the same result. Finally, I just tried undoing the restore and again, got the same result.
What the PC does exactly when it boots up is this: The boot up goes as usual until it comes to the black screen that has the Windows XP Home Edition logo on it with the little progress bar that oscilates back and forth. After this, the screen would go blank for a second or so, then the desktop would appear.
What it does now is when the XP logo screen comes up with the little progress bar, the screen momentarily goes blank like it used to, then the dreaded blue error screen comes up for a split second, then the logo screen appears again for a second, then it goes back and reboots from the beginning again.
After that, it goes to the screen that gives you the option of booting up in the safe mode. I am able to boot up in the safe mode. I've tried to hit the "pause" key when the blue error screen comes up so I can read the message, but it comes up so damn fast, I can't read what it says. I'm sure knowing what it says would be of help.
It appears XP did not like me restoring it to a previous week. I did not close my programs one time and could not stop the restore process so I don't know if that made it worse. Also, when it restored itself, it took a long time. The progress bar on the restore took like 15 minutes, is that excessive? I'm hoping someone here can help me get my PC back to normal. In hindsight, I wish I had just removed the program as my PC has been error free up until now. Thank you for any help you can provide.
Sincerely,
Hans Groenewold
