OK I have a Maxtor 300GB 16MB/buffer and I work a lot on it since I film and edit videos. As of late I have a worring problem that never hapened to me before. Some folders and files (non of the esential stuff yet) cannot be done nothing to them. I can't open some folders and documents and files will start up the application but not load up or work. So if it's a video file the player will start but it won't play the file. Not only I can't open them, but I cant do anything to them: rename, edit, copy, cut, delete. It all just sits there ocupying space and making me anxious since I can't realize what is and when will my importan files get like that too.

I just recently copied a partition on this HDD cuz I neded the space to Install XP64 to troubleshoot my 4GB RAM problem and I just noticed that the files copied work no problem in the WinXP-Pro with which I copied them, but it won't open in WinXP 64. All the other files and folder behave the same on both systems (the same work and don't work), but the files moved with WinXP-Pro(32) work in that OS, but not on WinXP64.

I can't think why this is happening exept a virus I don't know of that might be there or the AntiVirus program itself NOD32 that I have on for the last 6 months. I can't remember if the problems started before or after I got this AntiVirus. I have the same trouble with Windows and with Nvidia drivers as well as with NCQ and without NCQ.

Nobody has any ideas???
I did a full SpinRite6 check and it showed no problems. The Check disk tool finishes with Fix file system errors and scan/recover bad sectors checked yet nothing gets fixed.

The drive is fully functional just some folders and files won't work at all. Nothing I do to them works. I can't even delete them.

You could try disabling NOD32 for a bit while you check to see if that is the problem. You could also try booting into safe mode and see if you can do anything with the files.

I already tried disabling NOD32 plus in XP64 I have no anti-virus and NOD is inactive.
In Safe mode it still doesn't allow me anything. It keeps saying that I need to check if the disk has full or write protection activated. But only on thsoe folders.

Can you see the permissions and what they are set to? Also look under advanced permissions.

If you are trying to use files that were initially created in one installation of Windows XP, and are now trying use them in ANOTHER installation of Windows, you probably have permission issues.

Every raw installation of Windows has COMPLETELY different User credentials. An account named "Jim" on one copy of Windows is NOT the same as "Jim" on another copy of Windows. So the second copy of Windows will deny "Jim" the rights to modify a file that was created by "Jim" on the first copy of Windows.

This problem can be overcome by logging in as an Administrator on the new copy of Windows and modifying the Security Permissions of the data folders that are causing problems. Using "Advanced Permissions", TAKE OWNERSHIP of the files and then reassign permissions to "Jim", giving him the right to read/write/modify/etc. the files.

How do I get into the Security Permissions on the folders and files I can't acces. Under proprieties I find no security tab.

Alos I have a new update. On the same PC I added a 80GB HDD that I needed to clean up so I copied the files I needed on the one that gives me trouble. I was able to manipulate the data no problem on the 80GB HDD and the first day once copied on the 300GB (trouble maker)HDD. Today (I'm not sure if it was the first reboot since the transfer) I was unable to acces any single one of the files I just transfered and worked with yesterday.

Could I have e malware of some kind changing permissions to folders? Something unseen by NOD, or online scanners like Panda? And why is it acing only on this HDD and not on any other one I have?
Also I took the HDD to a totally diferent PC than mine and behold, all the files that don't work in mine and I think a fe more didn't work there either.

I'm now really puzzeled. It seems to be software related as no mechanical problems seem to happen.

Most error windows say: "Disk protected or full" or "You do not have acces or permission to this folder"
So how do I get to the security permissions maybe something got scrued there once (whiered to do that only to on HDD and to some old some new files, but no clear ideea of what they have in common.

OK Rebate I got it. I was on a diferent computer and had to keep the system on so I couldn't reboot to Safe Mode and test it there. But I got on mine and I solved it.
Now I have another big question. Since until now I never tempered with the ownership of folders will I have to do this every time I reinstall windows? Plus I have folders over the network that now can't be accesed.
