Can't read from cd-rw or dvd-rom drive

I have a dvd-rom drive sharing the IDE channel with my hard drive and a cd-rw drive on the 2nd IDE channel by itself. I'm running WinXP SP2 on a Gigabyte ga-7dx mb. Whenever I insert a disk into either drive, it says "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows." I have pulled and reseated both IDE cables.

The strange part is, if I leave, say, a music cd in the dvd-rom drive and reboot the pc, I can open it with Music Match or whatever. However, if I eject it and reinsert it, the disk is unreadable again.

I'm thinking maybe a virtual drive problem? I had a virtual drive using Alcohol 120, but it is not enabled anymore. I'm pretty sure I had access to my dvd-rom in the days after I disabled the virtual drive, but I can't be sure.

try uninstalling your virtual drive software and see if it works after that. i have heard of problems with virtual drive software, although i have no experience with alcohol 120. i use daemon tools if i need to mount an image.

also, have you tried searching for a firmware update for either one of the drives?

best of luck...

I'll try uninstalling Alcohol. Both of my drives have the latest firmware.

Well, I tried uninstalling Alcohol and even unintsalled and reinstalled my drives again, still no go.
