I've got two u66 fujitsu hard drives and run the 17gb as master on ide 1, aopen ax6bc mb, and a cd-rom on ide 2. I just got back my 10gb from rma today and wanted to run it slave on ide1 but it won't detect.
I can put it master, but 17gb wont detect as slave on 1. Or, I can run it slave to the cd-rom on ide 2 which I am.

Am I missing something simple here?

Make sure the in the mobo bios you have the 'auto detect' set in there somewhere set on/enabled on.

Make sure you jumper the master on IDE 1 to Master with slave present not just master :)

I think you turned the lite bulb on in my head!!
It has a setting for master, slave, cable select and slave present. I'll try that. Thanks

Still no go!

I don't understand but am just running each as master on its own bus.

which is good anyway :)

Are both drive fujitsu? if not, they may just not like each other. I don't think it's much of a problem now, but back in the "when 1GB was the biggie", my maxtor would not work w/ my quantum drive.

It was my problem as I couldn't get any documentation for the jumper settings from the fuj website and finally figured out the "slave present" jumper configuration is for the MASTER, not the slave. Now it works but may go back as before.
