can't "press any key to boot from cd"

i'm just trying to boot into the winxp installer to reformat my hard disk and reinstall windows. in the BIOS i've set the CDROM to be the first boot device, and when the comp boots up, it faithfully starts to boot the winxp cd. however, when it loads the message "press any key to boot from cd", no matter what keys i press, it never boots into the windows installer. instead it just goes through the ellipsis points and then loads windows normally. i've spent hours on this problem and i'm completely stumped.

i've managed to eliminate the cd drive, and the winxp cd itself as the cause of the problem. that leaves the keyboard, the motherboard BIOS, or the boot sector of my hard disk as potential culprits.

i would greatly appreciate any ideas you guys might have about why this is happening. it is surely one of the more frustrating problems i've ever encountered, because it seems like such a simple problem, yet for all my knowledge of computers i can't seem to solve it. thanks in advance for your help.

first thing that came to my mind, is your keyboard USB? If so, you should check if the USB Keyboard legacy setting is on. It's in your BIOS, you might have to poke around. but generally by default legacy key/mouse will be off.

I've always have a bitch of a time with my USB keyboards. Like when Chkdsk runs I can't "press any key to skip disk checking"

Like the guy before said make sure the USB setting in the bios is turned on. Also turn off the option to boot from other devices is turned off.

thanks for your replies. i went digging in the BIOS and sure enough, there was an option under advanced configuration having something to do with USB. i have no idea what it did, but enabling it fixed the problem. i have to hand it to the rocket scientists at DFI who decided to disable USB keyboard support by default. not sure if that was intentional or just a bug, but it cost me several hours of my life.

again, thanks for your replies.

I've owned dozens of MB's, and not a single one had USB legacy enabled by default. Hell MB's still have PCI as default display type (NOT PCI-E) Even with it enabled *USB* you can still encouter issues.

a great example my Virus software did a scan at bootup (before XP loaded) it found a virus. "D" to delete didn't do a damn thing because my KB is USB. I still encounter numerous issues with the legacy setting. Also as I said before, I can't abort chkdk from running, and it wastes a good 4 minutes to do a full scan of my drives 🙂
