Hi,

I recently got myself an athlon comp :)

Athlon 750
asus K7V bios 1003
256mb of apacer pc133
20GB ibm gxp34 hdd
sblive! Player
cambridge fps2000 speakers
sony 32x8x4 cd-rw

and I cant play quake 2 online :(
I get 99% packetloss

does anybody know what could cause this??

I can play offline perfectly (playing single player/running around the map by myself/playing agianst bots)

I have also tried to play UnrealTournament online and i cant play that properley either (the packet loss isnt as bad in UT as it is in Q2) i get about 40% pl in UT

I know the promlem is'nt my modem, my isp or my phone lines. because i have my old computer next to this one and using the same modem and phone lines i can play with minimal packet loss. And I have 2 ISP's. i get this problem with both of them. I've also called them and they say nothing is wrong, it must be my computer. and i've tried 2 different modems, one v90 and the other 56kflex.

I have formatted 3 times (which means ive re-installed windows and the games a few times)
and it didnt help.

My ping to my isp is 90ms. and 130-180ms to the 30odd servers i have tried to play on.
I can download at up to 5.8kbytes/sec

which suggests that its not a hardware fault.

I have tried playing with and without using my config file, and ive tried different rates and cl_maxfps

here are some screenies of the sort of pl i get.

http://www.users.bigpond.com/emeraldp/smurf1.jpg(60k)

http://www.users.bigpond.com/emeraldp/smurf2.jpg(80k)

It ussualy takes about 2 minutes to connect to the server, and then i timeout after 10-20 seconds(getting 99% pl the whole time)

my netgraph is green down the bottom with red blocks about 1mm apart and 2mm thick.

In unreal tournament my packetloss coming in flash's from 0% to 40% every couple of seconds and about 0 to 20% going out
the transfer rate is very low, ussually below 1000bytes/sec, and allways below 2000bytes/sec

I get that "phone line out the socket" icon nearly all the time in both games.

The only thing that comes to mind is the windows CD being damaged and when i installed it, it copied corupted network files

What files do games(q2,ut) use to connect to servers? (ie winsock.dll ? ect)
(is it possible that software is causing this?)

and how can i find out if these files are corupted?

Thanks in advance for any help.

don't know about UT but for q2 i'm betting it's your framerate.
it's probably too high :)
cap it to about 50fps
cl_maxfps 50
and see if it's still giving you hell

Yeah I wanted to play Quake TF a few months back but my packet loss was horrible. I have a cable modem and my ping was below 50 but every single server I got bad pl. I got some in quake2 but not as bad. When I used to play Quake TF two years back or whatever, I never had that much PL! Dunno any solution... I'm pretty much all about Half-life :).
