Can't play "Legally Blonde"! Help!

Mornin' all,

My girlfriend has been given Legally Blonde on DVD as a present from her slightly (read: eternally and utterly) batty grandmother, sadly the grandma has ordered it off the 'net from the good ol' USA, so it's a Region 1 disc.

Argh.

Now, have only got a DVD drive on the PC so I want to see if I can DivX it or at least just rip it to hard disc so we can watch it. However, Smart Ripper is reporting "broken blocks" when trying to rip, the speed goes down to 500k/sec, and this is as soon as ripping starts. Vobdec won't go near it, keeps bombing out.

Has anyone else has this problem? Got any fixes? I mean, it can't just be that it's an NTSC/R1 disc, there must surely be something wrong with the disc? Yeah?

If anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful, I'm not a huge fan of American-teen-weirdo-drama-chick-flicks but she is and I need to keep her happy. Please. ;-)

(Oh, and before you ask, my PS2 won't play it because of "region restrictions", so I've got nothing else to play it on, sigh)

Cheers,
Dopefiend

I haven't tried doing this yet, but you might look at Virtual CD to see if they can help you with the ripping problem. They supposedly allow you to create a "virtual DVD drive".....

Thanks for your help guys- as a result, I've found cladDVD XP works nicely, can rip the files to one big file (useful when XMpeg is screwing around), can retain all or one of the audio streams, etc. It's by a company called CloneAD (Hotbot search will find it), seems to rip that R1 disc easily with no troubles.

Cheers,
