I just bought the LOTR dvd and tried to play it in my samsung dvd drive. It identified the dvd, showed the menu screen, but won't play the movie itself. I am using the propietary dvd player software that came with the lotr dvd.

My computer:
p4 1.8a
gf3 ti200
256 mb ddr
winxp

Res:
1024x768
32 bit

We're you able to play movies before? Do you have another software DVD player installed?

I just bought LOTR and installed the default player and it worked flawlessly. Maybe you should try uninstalling and reinstalling the InterActual Player.

You are right. You need a decoder. I had previously installed intervideo which came with my motherboard (Abit KT7A-Raid). Do you have any software DVD player? Did any software come with your DVD drive? The previous software (InterVideo WinDVD) had the decoder, but I used the interface of the InterActual Player. If you cannot find any software, do a Google search for DVD decoder or software player and pick a free utility (or try c/net). Good luck! :)

the dvd drive i currently have was ripped from a dell computer

The included decoder was "windvd" 1.xx, a very outdated version!

1.xx and winxp didn't like each other very much.

I found a somewhat fix to my problem, I downloaded a trial player which will expire in 30 days. When it expires, the player AND the decoder become unusable? Or just the player?
