Can't play DVD's with Lite On drive and PowerDVD XP 4.0

I'lll just attach the email I sent PowerDVD tech support. Maybe someone here can help.

"I recently purchased a Lite On DVD drive and installed the bundled PowerDVD XP 4.0 software on my system (also tried the latest patch). The software works fine for audio cd?s but when I try to play Cannonball run or any DVD for that matter so far the player completely freezes, nothing I can do will close the program. I?m forced to shut the computer off or hit the reset switch? no other program I?ve used has crashed this bad. I can get the program to crash every single time I try a DVD-ROM so it is not a hit or miss issue. Is there possibly a problem with my drive or is it software related? I can browse any CD or DVD in Explorer? this only becomes an issue when I try to actually run the movie from PowerDVD.

I did notice that the drive is somewhat loud when opening and closing, at times when reading cd?s and also had a strange sound of a spring being loose when I installed the drive (not to the point though that I believed anything was broken inside? I just had the strong urge to open up the drive to see what was making the sound. Of course I didn?t take that course of action since that would void the warranty.) This drive is obviously going to be returned shortly if I cannot play DVD?s.

My system is as follows:

Pentium4 1.6A

Asus P4B 533 (Intel 845E chipset)

Corsair 512MB PC2700

Western Digital 80GB w/ 8mb cache (Primary IDE Master ?end of cable)

Lite-On 40x12x48x CDRW (Secondary IDE Master on Promise ATA66 Controller card- end of cable)

Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM (Secondary IDE Slave on Promise ATA66 Controller card- middle connector on cable)

Visiontek Geforce4 Ti4600

Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum

Windows XP Professional (all the latest updates from Windows Update)

That?s all the pertinent information that I can think of, I hope I?ve provided enough info for you to go by.

Thank you,

Tim Snyder"

wow, pretty close to my system

Pentium4 1.6A

Asus P4S533

samsung 512MB PC2700

Western Digital 120GB w/ 8mb cache

Lite-On 32x12x48x CDRW

Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM

PNYGeforce4 Ti4600

TurtleBeach Santa Cruz

Windows XP Professional (all the latest updates from Windows Update)

but my dvd's work fine in it. (using PowerDVD 4.0)

I'm not sure if there is more than one 16x DVDROM from LiteOn or not but the only thing I can think of right now is the ASPI drivers , XP doesn't install these at all .

You can get the latest version Here from the Adaptec site.

installing the ASPI drivers had no effect whatsoever. still crashes my system. In the past year I don't remember running any applications that crashes this bad. I'm affraid this drive might be faulty. I installed a similar dvd drive w/ a system that was running Win2k and it worked flawless (I have the one without the volume or headphone jack in front). This seems like a hardware problem... but I haven't beeen able to get the drive to behave abnormally with any other applications. It could possibly be a compatibility issue with this controller card I'm using. I'm going to try and run the drives off my secondary ide on the motherboard.

Thanks for the help

that was it...plugging the ide cable into the board solved the problem. the drive works fine now.... when I find an extra ide cable I'm just going to run my cd burner directly off the pci card... but for now I have to share the drives on one cable. I just didn't see the point in removing my burner(and dvd) from the promise card.

Thanks again
