Can't play any video files

OK, I am running Xp and I am really not sure how long this has been going on, but every time I try running an mpeg or avi video file the computer gives me a BSOD and memory dump. It is only video, as I can play mp3's and wavs. I tried running it in several different players too, but it crashes right when I open it. This is for any movie or avi. Any thoughts?
