I hooked up a digital camera to my PC with and ATI all-in-wonder card. I used the TV utility of ATI software, and changed the input device to svideo, and hit record. I recorded (and watched as I recorded) 1 hour of video. It saved the file as a mp2 file, about 2.3 gig. Ok so far. Now I try to use either file player or Microsoft movie maker, and both say " can't play file, missing codec" Why is it I could view this while recording it, but can't play it back, that seems insane !!

Help !!

Thanks in advance.

You need to install the ATI DVD player to install the codecs to view your MPEG-2 (*.mp2) files even if you don't have a DVD player on you rig.

Hey, Aloha, Oregon...you're not far from my place!

Thanks rbv5 ! I thought the dvd player was installed, but when I get home I will double check (I do have a dvd player in that machine) I thought that was part of the ATI package, but maybe not.

Forest grove is in my backyard (sort of) rbv5. Any my brother just made a nice tivo box out of his 7500 aiw. I am trying to get my older aiw to do that, but the Guideplus software keeps saying "no tv tuner". Thanks for the reply.

Hmmm, sounds like maybe fubured software install somewhere. Depending which MMC version you have installed, the DVD player is either included or a seperate install. Analog video capture is pretty much the same for all the AIW cards, so your AIW should work as well as your brothers AIW 7500 (I own both, and have used both for that purpose). Ask away and I'll give you any help I can. Good Luck!

I checked, and I had the dvd player installed on my 2000 setup, but file player still had a problem. Then I added the dvd played to XP, and when I try to play the file, it aborts with some error. I will have to get back with you on the details tonight. Thanks for the offer of help.

OK, here is the latest. After 3 hours of installing and de-installing different programs, I can now view mp2 and avi files from the ATI player and the Windows media player 9 beta. But I still can't do a video capture in Windows Movie maker 2, it will do the avi file for video capture, but for the mp2, it says: (quote):
"The file C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\bill-12princesses.mp2 cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

If I can play the file in windows media player, why does it do this ? Help please !!!!!!

I know what my sig says, but this is another reason Microsoft really s!cks !!!!!!!!!!!

BTW this is moviemaker 2, the first one doesn't support any kind of titles. The thing that gets me, is that it took me hours installing all kinds of drivers/codecs/softwate, untill both ATI file player AND Windows media player thought I had the codecs installed, and then when I am finally sucessfull, movie maker says "no codecs installed for this type", so it doesn't think they are installed, but everything else does think they are installed. Da!n windows !!

Help Please !!

I did a quick MPEG-2 capture and imported it into Movie Maker 1, no problem (I never use this app btw) renamed it *.mp2 and *.mpg, worked both ways. I suspect a driver/software installation problem.

Which AIW card, OS, driver version, MMC version, WDM driver version, DX version (do you have the windows media codecs installed?) do you have installed?

Do you see multiple ATI WDM entries in the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" subtree in device manager? (I have 6 entries)

Lets get to the bottom of this:)

I am also having the same problem. I record in mp2 cause it has great quality. Now what I want to do is edit it and I can't find a program to do it. Is that Windows Movie Maker u are talking about?
