Can't Overprovision on Crucial MX 300 SSD

Hi I'm using a Crucual MX300 525GB SSD on my Asus X550 DP (DS101-CA), The Cucial Storage Executive Client won't let me Overprovision. I've attached screenshots if that helps. Anyone know what I can do to resolve this? (This stays the same with momentum cache on or off)

I am only guessing; perhaps its because the MX300 is the boot drive...? In any case, you can achieve the same effect by reducing the partition size but it will probably require a third party utility like EaseUS Partition Master because its the boot drive 😀

That symbol it is showing means the drive is locked down.
I supposed this edition of the software don't recognize your SSD correctly, since you should be able to PSID reset it.

As for overprovisioning, don't bother, there is absolutely no need for this to be done on a consumer drive using the typical workload of a consumer.
If you really, really want to lose some of your storage capabilities, then you could just shrink the partition down X%, and leave it at that.
 
You don't need to make a blank partition for overprovisioning, just leave some free space and it will serve the same purpose. It's not like ssd actually knows you made some space just for OP.

But the fun part is naming an empty partition "Top Secret" or "Evidence." 😛
 
Got it to work by connecting it to my pc and installing windows there with the utility, I turned on overprovisioning while it was connected to my pc and got insane speeds on crystal disk, but when I put it in my laptop the speeds were the same as before. (momentum cache speeds)


Anyone know why it's not speeding up on my laptop? I tried even allocating 35% to the OP and it's still default speeds.
 
You mentioned "Momentum Cache". That's a RAM-caching mechanism for the SSD.

Do you have that installed on both systems? Same RAM type, size, and speed, in both the desktop and laptop? Same CPU?

Edit: Because, benchmarking the SSD with "Momentum Cache" enabled, is really benchmarking the CPU and RAM of the system, and not the SSD.

Disable that Momentum Cache crap, on both rigs, and then do a CDM (CrystalDiskMark) benchmark on both rigs, and post the images. Then maybe we can tell you if anything is wrong with your rig or SSD.

I've tested the ssd in my laptop with momentum caching off. Then I ran a test with default settings (no over provisioning or momentum caching) and then with over provisioning but no momentum caching, the results were identical
 
That's... unsurprising. Testing with no OP, and no MC, versus with OP, and no MC, should yield the same benchmarks. OP doesn't "speed up" drives, it only works to help prevent slowdowns (in write performance), when the drive is mostly full.
 
Hmm my samsumg drive got a huge boots in speed with RAPID+over provisioning, that's why I'm a little stumped

Comparing the results of one drive with additional over provisioning to a Samsung drive with RAPID mode enabled is not a fair comparison, as having a larger OP is not the same as having RAM caching enabled.

RAPID mode looks awesome in synthetic benchmarks, but there is hardly any real-world difference......and hopefully you never lose power with that feature enabled.
 
I've also tested my crucial drive in my pc and got 1.5x the speed that I'm getting in my laptop (momentum caching and over provisioning enabled)
 
Could be a different SATA controller used or different motherboard chipset in your laptop, or could even be the power settings or drivers.
 
Oh and when it was in my pc, I tested with with just momentum caching after that was done I tested it with momentum caching + over provisioning and definitely saw the performance boost.
 
It is useless to test with any caching software installed. You are testing the RAM, not the SSD with that enabled, since RAM is many times faster than a SSD on a SATA bus.

Also, for what it is worth, the more you OP, the lower the WA (write amplification) is, up to a point.
All SSDs come from the factory with a certain percentage already OP.
The only reason you would want more OP is if you tend to fill the SSD up, and the OP will help alleviate higher WA because the SSD has more "room" to move things around.
