Ok, I've got a rev. 1.1 Gigabyte 7VRXP motherboard (BIOS F12, latest 4in1's, WinXP Pro sp1), and I just can't get the bus beyond 142MHz without major stability problems.
I've believe I've eliminated the processor and the RAM as the limiting factors- used to have a 2000+, recently replaced with a 2600+ 266MHz version (stability problems persist at 142MHz wall), and I've upgraded my RAM from cheap PC2700 to Corsair XMS PC3200 CL2 RAM (same 142MHz wall). I've upped the vCore, vDIMM, vAGP, etc. I've tried RAM at FSB-sync (266MHz-mode) and at 2.5xFSB (333MHz-mode). Tried various memory timings from slow to aggressive. Tried the HD on the master IDE and on the Promise ATA bus.
Using on-board sound. One PCI card (FireWire). AGP card is a Radeon 8500 128MB retail.
Nothing will get me past the 142MHz stability barrier. I've seen people post higher FSBs with this board before, so did I just get unlucky and get a not-too-overclockable mobo, or is there something else? Processors ratios are still locked - could I be hitting the wall there? But same FSB wall on two different processors?? Unlikely.
I'm very temped to dump the Gigabyte and get an Asus nforce 2...
