Can't output to TV

I have an ATI AIW 9800Pro which I am trying to connect to my HDTV ready wide screen TV via the DVI to component adapter. I can't get any picture and I'm not sure why. I can't get the ATI display adapter on the computer to "turn on" the component output to the TV. Does anyone know what settings I need to put in to get this to work? I tried 640x480 @ 60 Hz without success. I think the problem lies in somehow enabling the TV before connecting the cable.
