Can't Open .xlsx Files

I have a computer with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2003. I have downloaded Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System. Everything worked fine until my wife opened an e-mail attachment containing an .xlsx file. Somehow the computer started thinking it was a .pfd file.

Even though I have gone back and instructed the computer to use excel to open this file, it won't use the excel converter.

The Compatibility pack works fine for .docx files, just not .xlsx files

I have removed and re-installed the Compatibility Pack with no success.

Any suggestions?

I do have Office 2003 SP3 installed.

Excel is not listed separately when I go to the Control Panel to remove a program - it only lists Microsoft Office 2003. I'll try using the installation disk to see if it will let me uninstall and reinstall Excel tomorrow.
