OK I think I've screwed up here.I've just built a new system loaded win2000 pro created the administrater password, then proceeded to load all drivers along with a bunch of software including service pack 1. I then took the system to my church and we created a power user acc. named projecter for individuals that will be running our new video projection system. Rebooted the system and several of the programs won't work under this password. Was I suppose to create a new password before I installed the software and drivers. I'm a newbe with Win2000. Thanks in advance for any help.

Permissions on user accounts is quite difficult to understand under W2K, heres what I know:

When installing W2K from scracth, you can only install drivers as Administrator (which is what you've done). It then becomes tricky, when it comes to installing software. In theory what you did shouldnt cause any problems. However, when I had similar problems, I got round it by installing the software under the power user account. This is possible so long as the software isnt installing any services (if you dont know what that means then dont worry, as longs as its not complicated software like some sort of server application then youre alright). You can run software as another user, e.g. run your application from your power user account as another user with administrator priviledges, but i'm not sure how to do this.

Hope that helps a bit, and I havent confused you too much!!

Just to add to what metallibloke said:

Create two other users with Admin privs. Make one of them a full admin and use it for administering the box instead of the original built-in admin account. Rename the original admin account. So far, we're just talking about some precautions to keep you from getting locked out of the system. If you were to farkle the single admin account while installing, how would you regain admin privs on the box? It can be done, but it's easier if you just have the original (renamed) admin account so that you can log on and fix the mess.

Now for the second addition admin account you created. You can lock that puppy down, denying access / privs for everything except the specific items that won't run for your Power Users. Now just log in under the Power User account, right-click on the shortcuts to the troublesome programs, and make use of the Use As function so that the power user is accessing the app through the locked-down admin account.

Hope that is helpful.

Regards,
Jim
