I just reinstalled Windows XP Home. I have a folder (D:\backup) with 3qty 15GB ghost images. These images are all broken down to acceptable sized files. I have accessed all of them before. After reloading windows I cannot open the folder or delete it This is the error I get.

D:/Backup is not accessible
Access is denied

I tried using the command prompt. I entered "del /f d:\backup" and it ran fine, but the folder was still there.

Any idea what is going on? This is wasting 45g of space on a drive I can't format.

My guess is that the user belongs to a user associated with your previous Windows installation.

Which isn't normally any problem, because you can easily access the folder's owner and permission settings just fine. Except that XP, by default, has enabled "friendly file sharing" or some such nonsense (folder options), so those settings can be a bother to find. (I use Windows 2003 where many of XP's more nasty features have been removed, so I can't be much more specific at the moment)

Try disabling "simple file sharing" and then going to the security tab and hitting the advanced button and then go to the ownership tab for that folder and taking ownership.

Or just do a search in the Help section for Ownership and it will show you exactly how to take ownership of it. After you do that you'll be able to delete them.

Dr Delete was able to get rid of half the files. Dr Delete was simply unable to open one of the files.

I was unable to change the permissions. I got an error about not being allowed to change the permissions. I tried booting Knoppix and I was unable to delete them there either.
