Can't open documents in Office

On one of my computers I can't open saved or sent Microsoft office documents. I can open the programs and create documents but once saved, I can not reopen them. What gives? My other computer has no problems. I get a long message that begins "you may be encountering this message because an antivirus program is not allowing the file to open." I used to use Norton but now I use Avast and I don't believe it ias the problem because I have disabled it and the problem continues. I also have Avast on the other computer that works.

What OS?

If it is Win2k\XP then disabling the program does not actually shut it down.

You need to KILL the service itself.

Make sure NONE of the following Processes are running:

AvMonitor.exe
ashServ.exe
aswUpdSv.exe
ashMaiSv.exe
ashWebSv.exe
avserver.exe
