Can't OC CPU and GPU at same time

Overclocking my computer has given me nothing but problems. I tried overclocking my GPU without problems (fairly conservative OC). This was with an ATI 5770 (850/1200 to 900/1350). A different time, I tried overclocking my CPU without much of a problem. Again, this was a conservative OC (2.8 to 3Ghz with my Athlon II 240).

When I overclock each separately, things seem to be stable with testing. However, when I try overclocking both at the same time, my computer crashes regularly. For example, running Furmark with both overclocked causes my computer to display a screen full of garbage (usually it's just alternating colored vertical lines) after a few seconds of testing. I then have to manually restart my machine.

On a side note, one time I was testing a small OC with AMD Overdrive (no GPU OC). I set everything back to default (no OC) and closed the program. A few seconds later, my computer crashed and the screen was full of garbage again.

Here is my setup:

Athlon II X2 240
Sapphire ATI Radeon 5770 w/ VF900 cooler
ECS A780GM-A Ultra Motherboard
4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-1066 (2 x 2GB)
500 Watt Rosewill PSU:
+3.3V@24A, +5V@20A, +12V1@19A, +12V2@18A, -12V@0.5A, +5VSB@2.5A

im no expert but back in the day i distinctly remember running into similar issues on my old rig. ended up being PSU sucked hardcore.

correct me if im wrong though AT

Wouldn't surprise me. The motherboard is pretty crappy when it comes to overclocking. How could I further test to pinpoint the exact problem?

Swap out either one for a known good component?... It's usually easier to start with the PSU.

Well, yeah...but I don't want to have to drop money on a part that might not be the cause of the issue. However, I might be able to borrow an extra PSU from a friend...
