OK...so I was atempting a fairly budget computer that still has some processing horsepower. Gaming wasnt so important, so I got a MOBO with a 6150. The MSI K8NGM2-FID has settings up to 250MHz (2.75GHz max with 3500) so I figured I should be able to hit at least 2.5-2.6GHz. Went with a single stick of RAM (origionally 512MB Kingston Value then 512MB Corsair value) ended up with a 1GB stick of Corsair XMS 4000PT. There is no way in hell the RAM is the issue (Ill admit I cant memtest the RAM...but three bad sticks?! no way). The only other item that should be of importance is the PSU...its pretty decent 350watt with correct/stable voltage. Temps seem to be more than fine...system temp never goes over 32C and CPU never hits over 38C even after long periods at 100% load. I dont know what the NB or other chips are at though, and I remeber hearing the NB chipset gets hot. Could this be the issue? How can I tell and/or is there a way to fix this? I dont know how/if I could get a fan to stick to it.

Anything over stock 2200MHz even using memclock 100MHz ends up giving me the same stability issues. Almost no issues at 2300MHz but it does hang ocassionally. 2400MHz more frequent issues not always prime95 stable passes 8M superpi 100%. 2500MHz can pas 8M superpi 100% of the time as well, but almost immediately hangs in Prime95, hangs probably 33% of the time logging in or running programs (just freezes no errors nothing) 2570MHz can get into windows but even if the user can log in opening any programs causes it to hang. Same issues everytime with all three sticks or RAM tested at any speed. Tried voltage from 2.5-2.7 (2.7 only on the DDR500 only tried 2.6 on the value 512MBs). Cant adjust voltage on the CPU...

Is it possible I just got a really really really ****** processor? CPUz says its a revison DH-E6 stepping 2. Not sure if that means anything. Is it possible that my OS is acting up? Its a fresh install of Win2K (was a bitch to install cause it doesnt recognize SATA drives, had to do it on a new IDE and then copy it over).

well if its not the RAM...and not the PSU... then i would say its the mobo...

a good mobo is imo the key to overclocking stability...u said u cant change the CPU's Vcore (im assuming thats because the mobo wont let u ???) suggesting the mobo is a cheap one...

i mean yea ok u should be able to oc a little bit,but if u dont have a good mobo then dont hold ur breath for much at all...

im telling u thos stuff from experience,as in my case when i had a cheap old "FoxConn" mobo i could only oc my 3000+ to 2.08ghz before it wouldnt even boot into windows...i then purchased a Asus A8N-E , and with no other hardware changes at all i reached 2.64ghz prime stable...

so if u intend on overcloking get a better mobo ???

Thats the thing...many people are buying this MOBO and most have hit the max 2500MHz with the 3000 and 3200s. Its also been reported hitting the 2750max with the 3500 and 3700. No, not the best overclocker, not voltage options etc, but it should be able to at at least OC a little (cant even get 200MHz out of it as of now). Its possible that my particular MOBO sucks...

Ive always wondered, why the hell cant anyone make a good MOBO with good integrated graphics for cheap? They automatically assume if you dont play games you only want ****** garbage. These 6150s arent terrible, but not all that great either...I think they could be much better for their 80-100$ price tag. Or if I could actually get a nice MOBO for 50-60$ so I could go buy a cheap video card and still stick to a reasonable budget.

The only options seem to be for hardcore gamers or stupid ****** dumbass lame idiots running word who dont know anything about computers (in which case they dont even need the cheap garbage thats not actually cheap...they could make a 200$ PC WITH XP that would be plenty fine for them). Everyone seems to have forgotten the power users who actually want to do stuff with their computers besides games. And there is no reason to spend the extra couple hundred dollars "just because" when we should be able to get it for less. Much less. I can get a nice CPU RAM HDD and DVD drive for the same price as just the stinking MOBO alone. Something is seriously wrong with that.

Calm down. It seems the problem is that you did not lower the Hyper Transport Link multiplier. You need to change it from Auto/5x and set it to 3x. Then reboot and set the desired oc speed and you should be ok then. Thats if the cpu and even the northbridge can handle the higher mhz speeds.

If you were trying ocing at a Auto/5x setting, which would be 240mhz x 5 - 1200mhz htt link. That is WAY out of spec and you would not get stability at that high of a htt link.

If it turns out it works fine at 3x htt, then raise it to a 4x to get as close to 1ghz as you can.

I didn't see you mention the htt link so that is why I am saying for you to lower it. You could have already lowered it and just not mention it in your thread.

Three thoughts--
try a better PSU ...350W is kind of low even for a budget system especially if its not one of the better brands
try leaving the case open and aiming a box fan or something like that at the motherboard and see if there is any improvement (might suggest your north bridge is too hot)
Relax your memory timings a lot (3-4-4-8 or so) while trying to keep the frequency near 200mhz with 2.7V

Just to throw it out there to try if you haven't. Turn off "Cool and Quiet" in Bios?

Lower the hht link to 3x which equals 600mhz or try 2x (400mhz) just to make sure that the htt isn't the problem.
