Okay, here's my problem. Last wee my sister and I set up a homework network to see if we could get it to work. Her comp, (a brand new Sony Vaio) running WinXP was the server and we used a NetGear 5 port ethernet switch and RJ45 cables. My computer (running WinME) and her daughter's laptop were the clients. We got it to work pretty easily. We were only sharing a 56K dialup connection but this was just see if it would work.
We have Dish Network and decided to get Starband, their satellite internet accesss. The installer came out and mounted the dish on the roof then he tried to install the software and modem on her laptop. It was not pretty. It did not work at all. In fact the software messed up her system so badly she had to reformat the hard drive.
So we decided to use my computer as the server. The installer tried to connect the modem to my comp via USB and couldn't get it to work so he installed another NIC card to hook the modem up to. He got Starband working then we tried to network. The installer was trying to help us and installed WinProxy which really didn't work He tried Sygate which wound up working, then the installer left and naturally it stopped working. We tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times but no dice. She keeps giving me an XP networking setup program to run on my comp but it doesn't work.
In fact the only thing that running networking progs on my comp seems to do is knockout the satellite data accelerator, (which is what makes the signal fast) so I have to reboot the comp and the modem several times just to get it to work again.
So, what am I missing? The comps are just not seeing each other at all. This comp as the server has only worked twice very briefly. I have no idea what makes it stop working. The cable looks fine and everything is plugged in.
I don't know where to get tech support for this. We paid $700 for the Starband equipment and installation but they don't offer network support. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
