Can't map drive over VPN

SONYFX

Senior member

Hi

I have set up a VPN which connects fine. I can Ping any machine on the remote network but I cannot map a network drive.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Can you unc to the share?
\\servername\sharename

Have you tried disconnecting network drives?
from my computer > tools > disconnect network drives

and they try reconnecting them

When you say you can ping the remote machine is that by ip or hostname?

Are you trying to map the drive using the ip or the hostname?

LMK

1. No

2. Yes, but it still says can't find folder

3. by ip

4. ip, it actually worked when I did it the first time, then after I restart my comp I can't map anymore.

How is the vpn connection setup?

Is this a client to hardware vpn or hardware to hardware (site to site tunnel)?

I just used the network connection wizard to connect, typed in the host name, enter username+password.

Maybe something with NetBIOS not getting through? Or maybe the vpn server's administrator (unless that is you) is blocking SMB/CIFS?

I got this reply from the administrator, I think tha'ts the reason, but how can I change my networking configuration? (I use ADSL and when check ipconfig it shows IP is 192.168.2.10)

If you have "Can't not find the network path" problem, I guess you have router installed and your pc is receiving IP from DHCP server and your PC IP is 192.168.2.10, that's the reason.

Unfortunately, the VPN subnet is on 192.168.2.0, so please change your networking configuration to solve this problem.

when you are connected via vpn virtual adapter, the adapter ip address should be an internal ip address. You can get this ip address via DHCP or you have to assign a static ip. If you can ping the server you want to connect then I really thing you should be able to access it, unless there must be some sort of rules which block you doing so.

The admin is saying your home subnet must be the same subnet his vpn server is handing out. Is your home network (or whatever network you are on) using the 192.168.2.0 subnet? (I would be surprised if it was, but you never know, since most soho routers w/ dhcp server hand out 192.168.1.0 subnet by default)
