Can't manually control the 4pin Intel fan!

I saw that the 4 pin Intel fans have an extra pin compared to the "normal" fans. What it the pin used for?
Also, I've installed SpeedFan but cannot change the speed at all. Any ideas on how to get control of this fan? I'm trying to do this because of the "oscillating" noise it produces at the current speed (discussed here: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...2190084&enterthread=y)
So, any ideas?

Speedfan isn't 100% in motherboard compatibility. I have the Gigabyte 965p-ds3 and it monitors, but doesn't control them (4-pin or 3-pin).

Check your motherboard BIOS and see if it has any fan speed control options. Other choice is to put it on a fan speed controller like one of these.

p.s. for a more technical response see zepper's reply here

4th pin is for PWM control via SmartFan (in BIOS).

Like I said SpeedFan doesn't work correctly on all motherboards.

i can't even find it in the bios

Unless you use a fan controler you will be stuck adjusting the fan in the Bios. Your motherboard may only control the fan based on temps and not give you any dirrect control over the fans.
