Cant make up my mind...

I am considering upgrading from my XP 1700 to either a Xp 2400 or a P4 2.4B. Right now the 2.4B is cheaper (at NewEgg) but I would have to buy a new mobo to support it.

Any suggestions?

BTW, I play lots of games. 🙂

i'd go with AMD
the overall cost is lower(comparing between SIS 655-aound $160 and Nforce 2-around $130, unless you get the Epox 8RDA+)

The resell value of an AMD chip is much lower than the P4 if you are going to be upgrading any time soon. I personally like the P4 chips myself.

TCWO has the 2400+ OEM + heatsink (to get the 1 year warranty) for 152$ + shipping, which I think is a reasonable price for the 2400+.

The initial cost of the AMD chips (2100+ and lower) are much lower then the P4 also.

I'm sorry, I don't buy a cpu based on what its going to sell for 6 months down the road. Hmm, imagine the 3.06ghz resale value in 7-8 months? :Q Your little P4 loses about 300-400$ in that time.

Thanks guys! And speaking of which, could you reccomend a good cooler (or a heatsink) for the XP 2400 then?

Decent quality + decent performance + cheap = either the GC69 or GC68. The 68 is $5 + shipping, and the 69 is 10$ + shipping. From SVC.com

If you overclock, look into the XP2100+. The ones at newegg are basically downbinned 2600+ parts. They almost all run at XP2600+ speeds at the default voltage of 1.65. Picked one up myself last week for $93. Got it
running at 13.5 x 166, same as XP2800+.

Thank you Bgeh for the reccomendation. 🙂 Glad to be here.

Jstic: I am not a OC'er but maybe I will try the 2100 instead of 2400 next upgrade. By the way, what mobo did you use for that?

Definately go for the 2100+. It's much cheaper than both of the aformentioned CPU's, and overclocks almost the exact same as the 2400+ (2.1-2.5 GHz usually).

The best overclocking mobos for Athlon XP's are Nforce2 motherboards, either the ASUS A7N8X or the Epox 8RDA+ (I think that's the name).

I'm running an Epox 8K5A2+ right now (KT333 chipset) and I run my Tbred A 1700+ at 166 MHz FSB, 1.83 GHz. I'll be putting my new 2100+ in there once I get it in the mail!

Don't bother trying to overclock anything below 166mhz with the 2100+ Atomic. On your KT333 board, the 1/5 divider for your PCI and AGP buses kicks in at that speed to set it back to spec, so while 165 will not work (165/4 = 41.25mhz, enough to fry PCI devices), 166mhz will because 166/5 = 33mhz. Your Vcore should be around 1.7-1.75v if you want to attain that speed (hell, you might get lucky and be able to get it stock voltage at 13.5 x 166).
