Can't login to Kubuntu anymore [fixed]

Red Squirrel

No Lifer
I was having an issue where Libreoffice would refuse to open, I would see in the task bar that it's trying then it would just stop trying and give up.

So naturally, I rebooted because that usually fixes weird stuff like that. Well now I can't even log back in. I had to use the guest account. I have it set to auto login, but instead of logging in it just goes to the login screen. If I type my password it just flashes back to the login screen. WTF?

Is there any logs or anything I can check to figure out what's going on? I'm hoping I don't have to rebuild my entire profile because that would really suck... It's practically 80% of the work of a clean install.

This is more serious than I thought, guest account wont let me login as root in the GUI so figured I would just use the console (the ctrl+alt+f key one) to create a test user that I can use instead of the guest account... well that brand new account wont login either. So only the guest account works.

Well that was weird, ended up finding something on google saying to delete the .Xauthority file in the home folder and sure enough that worked, but now I can't do a restart, it only logs out, so I have to hit the power button if I want to shut down or restart. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. At least I can login now.

Odd that a brand new user could not login though.

Have to su as root or use sudo, either way, have to put a password. Faster to just hit the power button. 😛 (it does a proper shut down)

Before I was able to just do it from the start menu though. Maybe another reboot will fix it... lol. This is starting to feel like I'm using Windows 98 again. Completely unexplainable weird issues that pop up at random.
