Can't log into windows xp

Hey all,

I need some help. I changed my windows password to a 19 letter password, restarted, and now when i enter that password in, i get an error message saying that the password is incorrect.

So, i tried my old password and that didnt work, and ive tried my "new" password with different spellings incase i spelt it wrong, but nothing is working.

The only account there is mine, no guest and no admin account. My account is an admin account.

What I would like to know is if there is why i can't log into windows and if there is a way for me to log into windows so that i can change my password.

I dont want to have to reinstall windows.

Any help is really appreciated.
Thanx!

Do you mean your account is THE admin account, or an account with admin rights ?

Generally you don't really get into the admin account unless you're booting into Safe mode. I know my account is named admin, but really it just has admin rights, I can only get into the real admin account by going into Safe mode, and it has a different password - set during installation.

I'm not an XP expert though, so maybe it's just the way I set my machines up.

When you get to the fast user login screen (the one just showing your name) hit cntrl-alt-del twice to bring up the legacy login box. Enter Administrator and then what you set the administrator password to be at install (might be blank so try administrator with no password too). From there you can change your accounts pw.

Ok great. Thanx. I ended up with some other error before I read your post, so I just reinstalled XP. Luckyily, most of my stuff was on my second hdd so I didn't lost much.

Thanx to all for your help 😉

for problems like this in the future

google "chntpw"

link for the lazy

then click the 1st link, make this boot disk and you can now blank out passwords as long as it's on an NTFS partition

(it didn't work on a Dell computer that seemed to start from an EISA partition)- it wasn't able to find the NTFS partition

(this site says it works better if you blank the password rather than change it)

and just like all freeware has the potential to screw over your system big time
