I reset a friend's wireless. She has a Linksys WAP54G (Version 2) Access Point and Comcast Business IP Gateway.

So, she had a wireless SSID of "linksys" and no encryption. I wanted to change that so that she would have encryption, so I tried 192.168.1.1 and realized that didn't work. Some google searching told me that in fact I needed to type in 192.168.1.245 to get into the admin and change the SSID/add encryption/etc. However, that did not work either. Then I looked up the details of how we were connected wirelessly and found out that the default gateway was 10.1.10.1. So, I typed that in, but the gateway didn't have any way of changing anything wirelessly obviously.

so, I am wondering how to fix this. Her computer is on windows vista, so if anyone posts any step by steps, please make them vista friendly (i'm used to XP).

Thanks!!

Read the instruction manual for the WAP54G and find out what its default IP address is supposed to be. Manually set your computer to an IP address in the same range, and then try to open the admin interface.

With a subnet of 255.255.255.0, yes, and you should be able to get there.

So that is the IP (.47) and the gateway should be 192.168.1.245? Then once I get into the admin and set up encryption, etc., should I change the IP and gateway back to gateway: 10.1.10.1 and IP 10.1.10.100 (thats what it was)? She does have other computers on this wireless.. that select IPs by DHCP, what do I do with those?

If this all doesn't work, is there another step I could try?

Set the computer IP to 192.168.1.240 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Don't put anything for the gateway as it doesn't matter. Once the IP is set in the computer. Open a web browser and go to 192.168.1.245. I would then change the AP to get an IP from DHCP and hit save. Then change the computer back to DHCP and look at the router's DHCP and figure out what the AP's new IP address is and then go to it and make the needed SSID, Encryption, etc changes.

The gateway is simply your connection to the internet, has nothing to do with the wireless AP, though most router's do have built in Wifi now but the IP of a WAP has nothing to do with the gateway address
