Old k6 mobo shuttle hot-603/ bios flashed to recognize last k6 and k6+ processors

shuttle hot-603 socket 370(k6) motherboard AT format
2 maxtor 2.8 gb hard drives
cd-rom
k6-3 380 overclocked to 450 mhz with good cooling
two extra case fans
128mb pc 100 ram

checked hard drive master/slave select pins - drives seen at startup
checked cd-rom jumper and floppy connection

motherboard detects all drives at bootup
counts memory
displays correct cpu info

using bootable disksette with cd drivers win 98se
all drives have been freshly fromatted

I get to the point where the win 98se os cd is in the drive and I can look at the directory of files on the drive but when i type the setup command and hit return the computer runs the normal scan of the drives before beginning transfer from the cd but

after getting the message that "setup is preparing to transfer files from the cd

the cd may spin up but nothing gets transferred to the hard drive

the cursor drops down a line and just blinks.

I tried an oem xp home disc but was told- ( error message ) - that it could not start without dos ( I think ).

Thanks in advance, Any help appreciated

This doesn't seem quite familiar to me...

After using fdisk and formatting and making the partition active (seems somewhere around here I get the option to transfer some systems files from the floppy to c: ), then I reboot with the floppy in and get a DOS screen with three choices about booting from cd, booting with help from cd, booting w/o cd (IIRC).

The first choice is what I do, then I get a warning screen about an OS already installed (it's cuz some system files were transferref from the floppy to drive C ). I choose to install anyway.

Then I get the install screen and the process starts. I dobn't recall ever being able to read the drives contents or having to type the setup command? Perhaps I'm not remembering correctly or have misunderstood you. But am typing this in case you've gotten offtrack somewhere and this rings a bell for you.

format HD
boot from floppy
start from floppy with cd rom support
get to a prompt
change to e: ( cdrom prompt)
read cdrom directory
enter - setup - hit enter
setup perform check on system - enter
scan disk - no errors - exit
please wait while setup initializes - scanning registry - coping files needed for setup
blinking cursor nothing else happens - this is where I'm stuck

boot ffrom cd gives choice to boot from hd or cd - hd gives invalid disk message, cd gives option s
start with win98 cd

startwithout cd rom support
choose start with win 98 cd - blue background with text - welcome to setup - to continue hit enter
setup preparing to install windows - routine check - continue - enter
scandisk -
scanning registry - copying files - remove floppy any key restart
this cycle will repeat without beginning install - stuck here also

You say in your first post that all drives have been freshly formatted. How was drive formatted ?

In your next post you say HD formatted How was drive formatted ?

First make sure floppy drive is first boot device.

Are you using Win98Se boot diskette to boot to and then partition the drive using FDISK, then restarting per FDISK instructions, then you might want to go back into FDISK to confirm your partition. Then use FORMAT command from boot diskette to format the hard drive.

Then go back and do your O/S install from CD.

And BEFORE you do all of this you should buy Windows 2000 to replace Win98.

Good luck.

In addition to the above, can you back off on the OC?

Have you memtested ram?

What video card are you running? I know that if it's a Geforce 200MX that XP has a problem with it during installation. I've had to use a vanilla PCI vid card to install, then switched to the 200MX once the install is complete.
