Well... I just built my first PC and believe it or not everything went extremely well. Now I just need to install windows and for some reason that is proving to be a huge task. My DVD rom isn't reading the CD I think. I keep getting a black screen that says select proper boot device and press a key. Nothing is happening... I changed the boot priority so the ROM is first and still nothing. I get no errors as far as hardware and its recognized by my BIOS.

If anyone has any idea how I can access the info on the disk to get setup started please let me know. The CD is mint... no scratches at all. Its windows XP Pro.

If it helps... here is the system specs.
ASUS K8V Deluxe Mobo
AMD Athlon 3200+ 64
LiteOn 8x DVD Writer
2 WD 36GB Raptors (using the on board VIA RAID Controller) RAID 0
ASUS ATI RADEON 9800XT
SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY 2 ZS Gamer
1GB Kingston HyperX PC3200 DDR

Thanks and please ICQ me if you have any ideas. #121545022

yeah... it recognizes the HD and the array. For some reason my windows setup isn't coming up at all. is there anyway to manually run the setup? it isn't automatically doing it.

1. Are the jumpers on all ATA drives set correctly? Make sure every drive is set properly as Master, Slave, or Cable Select. Also, make sure you don't have any drive conflicting with another.

2. If it is an inexpensive DVD ROM drive, it may have problems reading a CD. If you have another CDROM drive, try using that.

3. If you have a Win98 DOS boot disk with an ATAPI driver, you can boot from that and just type:

DIR D: <Enter> (or whatever drive letter is appropriate if you have more than one IDE drive.

If the system sees the DVD drive, and it lists the directory of the disk, look for SETUP.EXE. If it is in the root directory of the DVD, type:

D:\SETUP <Enter> (again assuming the DVD is drive D)

Good luck. :)

does that keyboard have one of those stupid function keys you have to hit first to enable the F keys?

maybe try hitting F6 before the blue screen comes up asking for F6 (back like in the NT4 days)... other than that, I'm not sure what to tell ya

can someone poke me in the face with a ball point pen? this is unfreakinbelievable. what in the name of god is causing this craptacular setup to ignore me hitting my F6 key. is there some sort of special setting that has to be laid out? ASUS is kind enough to never call back when you have a technical support issue. i could use a walkthrough on whatever instant messaging client someone has so if you have any ideas please contact me on icq at 121545022. or gimme your aim or something... its not fun sitting next to this $2400 dollar paper weight anymore. lol... :(

oh yeah... microsoft support is run by martians that speak other languages.
