can't keep connected to wireless network

i just got my netgear wireless router and a netgear pc card for my laptop and installed everything and it was working fine for a few minutes.

but now i can't keep connected to the network. every few seconds it says the wireless network is unavailable and after a minute it will let me reconnect to it. it shouldn't be an interference thing because as of now the laptop is sitting right in front of the router, less than 1 foot away. it's starting to annoy me because i got dropped from AIM too many times and now can't connect at all because of their limit thing.

any ideas?

pc card is wg511
 
Is there any other wireless networks around/near your house? It might be dropping yours and picking up another one possibly. Does this happen with both WEP enabled and disabled? You might also want to try changing channels (6 is default for most, try 11) and turn power saving mode off. Other than that I can't think of much else, sorry
 
i don't know of any other wireless stuff that could be interfering other than my cordless phone (which i never use). i haven't tried it without WEP, only with it on. The default chan it was on was 11, i tried changing it around to no avail. i'll try the power saver thing now.
 
Try disabling WEP. Also try channel 6. I highly doubt its any of my suggestions since you said you keep getting kicked off when right next to your router, but it doesnt hurt to try. Also - how are you configuring your settings on your pc card - WinXP's config tool or the one that came with your card? (Assuming you're using XP) You might want to try the other one just for the hell of it.

Oh - also try rebooting your router. That solves most of my wireless problems. (Sorry I know none of what I said sounds like help but thats all I can think of)
 
changing channels didn't seem to help. i took off WEP for now. When I did the configuration through the pc card software it wouldn't even let me login to the router, so i don't know wha ti did wrong there. i rebooted the router and don't know if that has helped either.

i just now got reconnected and as of now i haven't been dropped yet.
