Can't install XP SP3?

Getting this weird error, please help.

Service Pack 3 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 3, or vice versa.

Are you running a checked build? What does start, run, winver say?

maybe you have a checked debuged version of the SP3? WHere did you download from?

SP3 was downloaded from MS.

Judging by the error, it says that I have a checked / debugged version of XP installed? I'm not sure what that means - I had someone install it for me.

Look in the registry to see if you have a checked or free build: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. Look for the CurrentType value.

Checking the System Event Log (in Computer Management) for Event ID 6009 will also show if you have a "Free" or "Checked" version of Windows installed.

"Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 6.00. 6001 Service Pack 1 Multiprocessor Free"
is similar to what you'd see with a "normal" "Free" version. "Checked" versions are used by developers and wouldn't be found on a PC purchased from a store or with normal OEM or Retail versions of XP installed.

I think I do have a checked version if it's giving me the error. I had someone install this who's no longer with the company. How do I fix it?

As we all know Microsoft has released the final version of Windows XP SP3 to public and its available via Automatic Updates, Windows Updates and Downloads Center.

I have received a few mails mentioning a strange problem which occurs while installing SP3 in Windows XP. A few ppl told me that whenever they try to install SP3 in Windows XP, Windows shows following error message:

Service pack 3 setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of service pack 3, or vice versa.

The reason behind this problem is that the update package installs retail bits on retail builds and checked bits on checked builds. But you can spoof Windows updates in order to install retail bits on checked builds and vice versa.

If you are also facing the same problem, then follow these simple steps and your problem should be solved:

1. Open regedit and goto:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

2. In right-side pane look for a String value "CurrentType". Change its value to Checked and if its already set to Checked, then set it to Free and click on OK.

3. Exit registry editor and try to install SP3 again. Now it should install without any problem
