Im a refugee from the Hardforums......but no one really knows anything over there anymore. So Im hoping you guys can help me.....Im gonna right this just Like i did over there.....

Ive done this a millions times before and never had one issue that i couldnt solve. That changed about 2 hours ago. Back up all my data, etc. Put the cd in, boot from it, hit f6 to install my raid drivers....that goes fine. It sees all my hard drives and partions fine. But when i go to install on any partion (all ntfs) it tells me that its not and xp compatibal partions. So i figure maybe something was just screwed up, so i delete the partions, repartion and try again. Same thing. Tried using xp and 200 drivers for the raid card. Same thing. Tried it on my mp3 drive (40 gig on ide 0), same thing. Any ideas??

trying to install to the raid? don't think that works with xp. try getting rid of the raid (bios, card, whatever) then install the os, then configure the raid and copy it over.

if that doesn't work, did you use one of the partition tools? not windows, something else?
do it from windows from the ground up. these aftermarket partition tools put stuff down low that windows sometimes doesn't like.

Ive intalled it 2 or 3 times on this same setup and i didnt get any problems. The partition that the os gets installed on has only been formated by windows. I tried to install it on another drive (drive 0 on ide 0) and i get the same error. Im kinda at a loss on this....never really been stumpt on computers before.

Make sure you flash your RAID card BIOS to the latest version. Make sure you get the latest drivers for your RAID card and install them from a floppy when XP setup begins. Make sure you disconnect any hard drives connected to your main IDE controller.

Latest drivers...check.
Latest bios....couldnt get it to install, but I'll try it again
I'll disconnect the other drive...Not sure why It will help....but I'm open to any idea. Thanks for the help.

still cant get latest bios to load....just sits there after it finds the adapter. When i get back i'll try it without anything else pluged in.

oooohhhhhh.... was the drive a dynamic disk in a W2K/WinXP system before?

was the partition part of a software mirror/fault tolerant set before?

Oh wait. You repartitioned. Hm.

Do you have a DOS diskette? If so, do a sys c: to overwrite the MBR, then go back to WinXP and repartition and reformat.

I'd sure like to see a copy of your MBR right now...

um......i think you confused me......either that or I just had a mojor brain fart. Not sure what you mean by dynamic disk. Not sure what you mean by software mirror/fault tolerant. I do have a dos disk (or at least a win 98 boot disk). Will dos even see my raid setup? Never heard of sys c:, so if you wouldnt mind going indept a little more i would appreciate it. Show me your mbr and i'll show you mine....🙂

on the sys c: thing, he wants you to rewrite the system on the mbr. it will clean up the MBR area of the disk. if something has caused an overwrite it could be the problem. if you're not sure how to do this, i wasn't the first time, read on. i don't, and never did like DOS, so i always find instructions. currently i use the instructions on an old rescue disk (98SE). you type help at the A: prompt to find it. it's quite a ways down the screen, but it gives the correct way to do it. and it's available to you right there. the fact that you can't flash the raid card is a big clue, but it's one that doesn't help me...it will help someone here, of that i'm sure. it's a biggy not to be able to flash anything. i just don't know what. in the meantime you prob should get with the raid card manufacturer online (email seems fastest to me, but the important thing is to ask them what could give the symptoms you're haveing with it) and get them in the loop soonest. they may be of more help sooner than anyone here. all i do know is that it is very unusual not to be able to flash anything.😕

if you can't flash after running the sys c: command perhaps a lowlevel format is in order. beyond that i'm at a loss. since i don't run raid (i read somewhere here about having trouble with installing winxp on a raid) i'll keep quiet and read what does work. i may want to know someday.

Thanks for the help. I've email Hightpoint earlier...but no response. Now that I think about, the reason i was going to reformat was because lag was really bad, felt like I was running on a 486 at times. Maybe the contoller card is just going out on me. I think either way, im going to have to put them in another system and transfer my backups off there. Thanks for your guys help. I think I'll end up here more often now instead of hard

EDIT: Though it still doesnt answer why I couldnt install it on a drive that wasnt on the raid contoller....I think everything is going to get backed up and get a nice LLF
