Can't install winxp a fresh install

I formatted my computer and then I created a boot disk since my cdrom was not picking up the cd as bootable. It starts to copy files from the cd and then tells me to restart the computer to continue the installation but when I restart it just freezes. What's the problem? I tried to copy the winxp files from the cd to the HD but it said it couldn't find "disk1" I don't know that that is but I exited the installation because I don't know if it's an important file or not. Any suggestions on how i can start this installation?

You should be able to copy just the i386 directory to your partition and then execute winnt.exe from within that directory.

.. you tried going into your bios and setting the boot order so that cdrom is first (ie. Usually might be floppy, C:, cdrom and you need to change it to cdrom; floppy; c: or whatever, as long as cdrom is first). I didn't know this for months after first getting into computer hardware.. always figured my cdrom wasn't bootable or something 😛

YEah, that's what I did. I copied everything from the i386 folder onto my HD and ran winnt.exe but it said it couldn't find a file disk1 but when I look at that folder disk1 is there. Also, when I install from the cd, it gets me to the menu to install winxp/upgrade or your pervious OS or something like that. WHen i enter the install winxp option, it reboots the computer and it does it no matter how many times I hit enter.

I did change the boot order but it doesn't seem to matter as it does the same thing.

Yes it does sound like you have a bad copy of the XP. Whoever you copied it from, get a new copy.

If that CD can boot on someone elses machine and you can indivisually select the boot order...remove the Harddrive and floppy from the boot order and make it all CD-Rom

I tried installing windows 2000 and windows 98 even from the cd and the computer restarts just when it asks me to press any key to boot from cd. I don't understand what the problem is, i need to install an OS my comps been sitting like this for almost a week now!!! I can't even install from the boot disks since it copies the files over and tells me to restart the computer but when I restart it just keeps on rebooting. someone please help

What do u mean by "it just keeps on rebooting"? So after everything is copied over from the boot disks, it just restarts by itself everytime it boots up?

Yes after it copies the files and says that windows will now restart to continue the installation process it will get to the point where it will start to boot up and then it will restart itself again. I tried changing the HD and it still does the same thing. Could it be the MB or the CPU? Any suggestions?

Had the same problem with the windowsxp from internet. Buy the original version or copy again. The Installation-CD is bootable with all CD-ROMs.

But it does the same thing with other OS as well. I can't boot from win 2k or win 98 cds either. I think it's a bad MB or something. I"ll go out tomorrow and buy a new MB and see if that'll work. BTW, what kind of warranty do MBs have? Mine's a shuttle AV61 a little more than a year old.
