I have an HP Pavilion ze4500 notebook. Purchased it in October of 2003. The processor is an Athlon XP 2500 Mobile with 512MB of memory. I wiped Windows Home off of it and installed WinXP Pro(not legit) and Suse Linux. This month I replaced the cd-rw drive, which had quit reading burned cdr's(it would only read pre-pressed ones). I replaced the drive with an AOpen dvd-rw/cd-rw drive.
I wanted to reinstall my legit copy of XP Home along with Mepis Linux. This is where the problems began. The computer will not boot off of my HP provided WinXP Home disc(it is scratched, but they seem minor). However, it will boot off of a burned copy of it. Midway through installation, installation stops and ask me to insert the Windows XP Home disc so it can locate a couple of files in the i386 folder. One of them is IEXPLORE.EX_, I can't remember the other one. Of course, the disc is already in the drive and no amount of clicking on OK will cause the files to be loaded. I also cannot browse to the folder because the D: drive does not show up in the browse menu. I can skip loading these files, but without IEXPLORE Windows doesn't do a lot, even though it will boot.
I tried installing Home a couple of times. Then I tried installing my XP Pro copy just to see what would happen. At about the same point as it was in the Home installation, I am asked to insert the XP Pro disc so that a couple of files can be installed which of course, it can't find. After skipping these files, I once again get the severely limited, but functioning Windows installation.
I am wondering if the computer has overheated too much and the processor or something else is damaged.
The only thing I can think of to try at this point is to put the old burner back in, since it will read pressed disc and try installing Home.
Incidentally, I was able to install Mepis Linux and that is what I am posting from right now.
Any insights or observations you might have would be appreciated.
