can't install windows update

on one of my systems when i try to install the specific update listed below, i get an error of a random temp file like Sl314.temp and a message saying that the application has generated an exception that could not be handled. the system is clean of viruses and spyware and i tried reinstalling the distributable .net framework all with no luck. any ideas is greatly appreciated!

What OS are you running?

Have you checked your system with Adaware and Spybot, and what antivirus do you use?

What Sig,maybe your hardware doesnt support it

the os is windows xp home. yes, i have already checked for viruses, spyware, etc. i used both norton 2005 and the housecall online scanner. the system is clean for sure. any other ideas?
