During an installation of W2k the computer starts loading files, gets to a certain point and then reboots itself...then the process starts all over again resulting in a loop type situation. W2K never gets completely loaded. Even after taking out the CD and restarting the computer it starts to load W2k again. again asking for the insttallation CD. Basically, can't get the installation finished.

The computer is a 900MZ Athlon Thunderbird on a MSI K7T Pro2a mobo with a new 80 gig WD JB formated with data lifeguard to 1 NTFS partition. The computer also has a voodoo 3 3000 video card, ensoniq audio PCI sound card, Promise ATA 66 controller card previously installed when the computer had 98se on it and a zip drive attached. A Teac 8x CDW and a Toshiba 16x DVD-rom and master-slave on IDE2. 192 meg of SDRAM.

Any idea why it keeps rebooting on installation?

Thanks, Mac

i would pull everything except the video card out while installing and make sure your memory and cpu settings in the bios are correct.

It's the promise ATA 66 controller card. Press F6 when the copying files initiates, insert the floppy containing the drivers & install away.

I noticed when the thing boots it ATA66 controller card shows up on splash screen from the previous 98se installaton.
I was going to pull it out. Is that an option? or just install the drivers like you said, before it starts to reboot?

You can do either. The splash screen shows that it's installed & recognized by the bios but win2k can't recognize it 'cause it's lacking the drivers for it. When installing win2k, you'll see a message at the bottom of the screen saying "Press F6 to install drivers for SCSI...blah, blah" or something in that line. Just press F6 and windows will prompt you to insert the floppy with the drivers.

Doh,
OK I remember seeing all that stuff at the bottom EARLY in the install, SCSI, even ATA 66. Heck, I thought it was loading it.

The thing reboots after filling out all the stuff like network name, admin password etc. and going to a page with the horizontal bar is about 2/3's done.

Anyway, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

Yes, when installing win2k, you will go through virtually the entire installation process even when the ata66 drivers are not installed at the beginning stage. Good luck.
