My computer cannot copy certain files onto the HDD to install Win XP. Do you think this is a CD issue or is this a ram/hardware issue?

The CD is a bit scratched up.

I had an issue like this and it was because my CDROM drive was overheating. I had to remove the side panel to the case and get a huge room fan to blow into the case. If you have a CD Burner, try installing from the burner, they tend to have the best chances of reading scratched up CDs. Also, make sure your HD is good. If you have bad sectors it could screw things up. You might want to do a full format if you have not already.

copy all the install files to the cd and run the setup from there. i'm assuming you're installing from the cd. if not then disregard.

If you have access to another PC that has a CD-Writer, you may want to try copying the files, I think this is okay legally as the other CD is damaged so long as you do not distributed...and yes...even promise to destroy it afterwards!

Then you can try the install again if the copying was successful, if it installs then it was the CD....if it still gives problems then it is most likely the memory....followed by hard drive or CD-ROM issues.

It depends on what files are not being copied.

Sometimes it has to due with the HAL that XP chooses,
or it has a problem with a Non-certified piece of hardware (driver).

Boot from a Floppy, then navigate to your CD drive. Navigate into the i386 directory. Type "winnt32 /checkupgradeonly" to determine if your hardware is XP compatible.

I actually found out that it was the CD itself. I got another Win XP CD and used my unique cd key and it worked fine. I'm up and about again!
