I get this strange error during the Win XP installation, after Windows has loaded the SATA drivers (and a little more after them, up to FAT32 and NTFS):

STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard error
C:\Winnt\System32\Ntdll.dll (or another specific file or driver)

I don't have a clue what causes this, I checked the Samsung HD using hutil and it works fine, CPU and RAM always ran fine in another PC, the only new componets are motherboard, DVD drive and HD. Memtest 86+ has been stable for hours now.

I'd like to try and isntall windows on the computer I'm typing this on and then move the HD to the PC where I can't install Windows and use the repair function. Will that work?

Here's an article about the error in the MS knowledge base, it says it's related to a bad driver. I get the error though before Windows has ever been installed on the HD though...

Bad or incorrect RAM has caused me problems loading Windows more than once. If your machine is new and never been loaded before, try using one DIMM in slot one to get the OS loaded. If errors continue when loading software your RAM could be the problem. HTH

it could be a bad install cd. i went thru hours of troubleshooting components only to find out a different install cd worked perfect.

Thanks for the replies!

I ran memtest86+ for 4 hours, and the RAM ran fine for over two years in my other PC, so it should be fine. I also tried two different Win XP CDs, both got me the same problem. I actually unplugged the HD and tried isntalling, and I get the exact same error. The board seems to recognize the HD just fine though, hutil (Samsung HD diagnostic tool) ran just fine and found no errors.

acpi causes headaches too, try switching modes or doing a bios update. You might even have to just use apm and forget acpi features.

It's working now, I don't know why but that's OK ;)

I was pretty sure the HD is broken because I couldn't install Win XP on another PC, when I created the partitions Windows said it can't install because the partition is not compatible. I tried it without using the SATA floppy (always thought you had to use that for a SATA HD...) and it works fine now. Never had issues installing Win XP when using the SATA floppy on other PCs though...
