can't install USB printer

older Celeron board with apollo chipset / win98se won't seem to install a Lexmark printer. Doesnt seem to allow assignment to USB just COM or PRN. detects "unknown device" adds it to the usb category of device mgr. any ideas?

printer is the Lexmark Z45.

Boot to safe mode and remove all of the USB entries in the device manager. Uninstall any Lexmark printer software as well. Reboot and 98SE will redetect USB. Try a USB mouse or something simple to see if it functions. If so then try reinstalling the printer with the printer USB cable disconnected until setup prompts you to connect it.

Are you installing the software first? Usually with Win98 you have to install the software/driver first, then plug in the hardware.
Also, when I install my Brother USB printer drivers, it asks me how the printer is connected-- local, local USB, network, or something else. In my haste I'm always tempted to hit "local," but just in the nick of time I see the "local USB" option. Maybe your drivers aren't set up right?

the Lexmark software doesnt offer a promt to connect the device. matter of fact its wording indicates the opposite. I can only get the software to install by selecting one of the incorrect non-usb ports and afterwards offers a test page. I have never seen the software ask to connect the printer.

or if i use the add-a-printer method first, i can add a port naming it anything but its described as an undefined local port.

there is no local "local USB"

thanks anyways but io been at it all day..this printer obviously doesnt support win9x tho the there is driver on the cd the box mentions only xp.
