Cant install usb keyboard

Miramonti

Lifer
I've tried to use a couple of usb keyboards but windows xp (sp1 or sp2) won't install them at startup, and asks for driver files (which have been installed). I installed each on another winxp computer and had no problems, so the hardware/drivers are fine.

It seems the problem might be that the "Human Interface Device Access" service won't automatically or manually. It depends on the RPC service, which is started.

error message: Could not start the Human Interface Device Access service on Local Computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found.

Any ideas?

BIOS option should only affect the keyboard while in BIOS or DOS. Once in Windows/Linux/etc, that BIOS option *should* not come into play.

But, if you have a free moment, might as well give that BIOS option a shot. I cannot imagine that it would do any damage.

No luck with enabling it in the bios. It does work before windows starts, as SUO suggested.

Error 126 seems to be a bear (per google), looks like full reinstallation might be needed. 🙁

It detects it each time and asks for driver files. But the files supplied don't have an inf tho to point to. In my other computer it detected it and installed automatically and I never saw a dialog box.

edit: fixed. 🙂
I used an old version of MyDrivers (very helpful utility) and extracted all of the driver files and inf's associated with the usb keyboard from the computer that it installed without a problem, and pointed to those when the problem computer asked for driver files. These included:

HID-compliant device
HID-compliant consumer control device
HID Keyboard Device
USB Human Interface Device

For some reason one computer asked for drivers for these and the other loaded them automatically. 😕

dealt with a printer(Dell A940/Lexmark on a Dell P4 system) doing the same..seems the drivers went vaporware once installed automatically..did same as you did ..put all the files where they are supposed to be..and printer started working..was weird.. 🙁
