Can't install SETI in XP

Hi, I'm trying to install the SETI client on my Windows XP rig. When I launch the installation file it unzips a whole bunch of files and then closes. After this, nothing happens. Is the setup exe supposed to auto launch or do I have to go looking for the installation folder? I believe I have the latest version (3.07) from SETI's website. Has anyone had this problem or have I just missed a step somewhere? Thanks!

Ahh, you are trying to install what is known as the GUI CLIENT. That is not the SETI CLIENT you should use. Click on the link in my sigline Team AnandTech SETI and just follow the directions outlined there.

The recommended CLI CLIENT will produce WUs in almost 1/2 of the time that it takes the GUI CLIENT to do the same work.

After following those instructions please post any further questions you may have and we will help you get things going. 😉

The GUI client should automatically enter the install shield after the extraction process is done.

Smokeball is right though the CLI client is bad to the bone and should be used if top notch speed and efficiency is what you are after.

If you follow those instructions to the T. you'll be good to go. I did today, and now i got the CLI client, SETIDriver and SETISpy up and running.

I'll vouch for Smokeball's directions for installing the CLI.

I had no experience with SETI at all, so followed the instructions line for line. My Win2k home PC is now doing SETI since RC5 is over. I'll be reading what I can to get up to speed.

yes, JonB is on the SETI team (one CPU for now).

When I started SETI I also installed the GUI version. It took me 24 hours to do my first WU on a 1ghz Tbird, after that it took about 6 or 7 hours using the CLI version.

Definitely ditch the GUI and go with CLI!!!!!!!

That's because you had the graphics showing!😉 ,with no graphics showing you would of had times nearer 10-11 hrs ,but yeah the CLi is still faster🙂

Are you on a SETI team? ,I don't see you listed in Team Anandtech under your forum name.
