can't install PCMCIA card, CODE 10 error

I was trying to install a SMC PCMCIA network card into an old sony laptop that was running winME. After dealing with SMC tech support the conclusion was that since I was getting a Code 10 error message, it was IRQ conflicts. I would have to contact the vendoer... i'm guessing that means Sony... for more support.

first of all, i did not see any IRQ conflicts in device manager. It simply said it was not installed correctly. I'm guessing the problem lies in the fact that the laptop is old or that it's winME. since it's not my laptop I don't want to install a newer OS.

so how do I get the device to work? if it's impossible, would a USB network card work in its place or would i run into the same problem?
