Can't install OS other than Windows2000/XP?!?

I recently replaced my harddrive with a Maxtor 30GB 7200rpm ATA/100 drive (see the rest of my rig in my sig) and installed Windows2000 on it. A couple of days later, I ran the install of WindowsXP with no trouble. I decided that I want to have a multi-boot configuration on this drive that would include Windows98 and that I wanted to begin from scratch, reformatting and beginning the OS installs with Win98. Well, I can't get the system to boot from a Win98 boot disk, neither floppy nor CD will work. Neither drive is the problem, either, as I am able to boot from Win2000 or XP disks just fine and I am positive these Win98 boot disks work because they function properly on my other system. Windows98 refuses to begin installation from an Win2000/NT environment(formatted FAT32), so installing from inside won't work. Naturally, I've clocked the cpu speed to stock clock for troubleshooting purposes. I'm down to believing that the harddrive may have something to do with this but don't want to deal with replacing it if I don't have to

Has anyone ever had this issue? If so, what's the fix? I work in the IT department for my company and have asked every other tech, some with 10 years experience, about this and they can't figure it out, either.

Help😱?!

I had the same problem after a failed attempt at installing advanced server. Even though I had the floppy drive as the first boot disk, it never would even light it up. I just cleared the CMOS and it's been fine ever since. Try that and see if it works,

Hmmm ... could be possible that Win2k has written to the Master Boot Record. Have you tried fdisk'ing your drive with the "fdisk -mbr" command?

kuk: Can I run an fdisk command without being at a DOS command prompt outside the OS? I can't do that since I can't boot off of a floppy.

TheKid: I think I already tried the CMOS thang, but I'll give it another shot.

Thanks for replying, guys🙂.

Hummm ... these are the boot disks that I use for Win98 and Win2k installations. Try these out ... they are different from the original Win98 boot disks.
