Cant install OS due to freezing

So heres the deal. My girlfriend as a HP pavilion zv5000 and her computer was giving her random crashes and going very slow, so I figured i'd just do a reformat. Since nothing was recently installed and the current driver set was working fine for her for the past months, i figured that probably wasnt the problem.

So i try reformating with the windows xp cd that came with her computer and after deleting everything it goes to the sequence where it starts to copy files from the disk to the hard drive [Before it restarts and goes to the graphic interface install part] and it would hang at around 5%. So i thought maybe the disk was scratched, so i tried with mine, this time it would hang around 9%.

Just to try things, i removed the extra stick of ram, moved them around, removed the hard drive and reconnected it. and tried again, and still no go.

Any one have this problem? sometimes it freezes and sometimes it actually blue screens at that point.

Im thinking it might be bad sectors on the harddrive that arnt allowing her to copy the os to those portions maybe??

thanks in advance to anyone who actually read this long post 🙂

Doesn't Windows run chkdsk before a new install? If your hard drive was bad it would mark the bad sectors or wouldn't continue the install.

Run Memtest on all, then each, stick of RAM for a few hours and/or try another CD/DVD drive.

It does run a chkdsk and it didnt show anything. How do i do a run memtest?

update:

I also tried installing with win2k last night, and during the windows install part it froze, then when i restarted my computer it said i had no bootable drive

Sounds more like the drive is dying than anything else.

Are the cooling fans working properly? Could be a cooling issue.

All in all, it does sound like hardware: cooling, CPU, RAM, etc. A RAM test is a very good place to start.

Two possible issues.

1 - You are using a 40 wire 40 pin HDD cable instead of 80 wire 40 pin cable.

2 - The CD drive has a dirty head or some other likewise problem pertaining to the CD/DVD drive.

The 2nd one is more probable.

Freezing in my experience has always been my cpu overheating , try removing the cpu and put some fresh cpu gel in there and make sure your cpu is alo powerfull enough to keep it cool , you can install extra fans too which cost buttons

try the drive makers utility to check it out. Seagate, western,maxtor...etc they all offer them for free

update: when talkign with my girlfriend, she said it all started happening when her computer blue screened and when she restarted she got a screen that displayed that there was no hard disk and it was trying to boot from a network. After restarting again, it started up as normal except with the "use last known good settings" window

hopefully this tidbit gives more insight. im going to try some of the drive maker utilities tonight.
I have already tried swaping out ram sticks and using only one and such

Thanks for all the helpful advice guys.
