Both computers are running Vista, which I suspect is what's causing the problem. Both have all the windows updates. I Googled this for hooooours last night and I haven't made any progress, well except for figuring out what it's not. I verified the disc is fine on a laptop they have, so it's not a media problem. And on both I tried copying it from the DVD directly to the HD. Here's what happens, I run setup, the install splash screen comes up for about 1/2 a second and goes away. Then a few seconds later I get a "setup is not responding" it doesn't say it'll try and figure out why it didn't work. Googling this I found out that it could be the osetup.dll in one of the install folders. So I got the file off my Office, which is the downloadable copy from MS's web site. Now I'd get "osetup.dll digital signature does not validate or is not present"

So I Google that to death, I removed the office 14 stuff from the registry and deleted stuff in the temp and programdata locations. The PC's system restore isn't working, all I can figure out is 2 days ago they had installed the student trial version. I uninstalled it and ran the MS Fixit program.

Any ideas where the hell I can do here? I'm beyond stumped, Google comes up with a bunch of people who have this same problem, but I'm not seeing a standard fix for this. I'm trying to install the professional version, if that matters.

Try installing in safe mode?

Maybe disable most startup items, reboot, and try again?

Do you already have, or have ever had, any other MS Office products on that PC? Could be a corrupted registry; something like CCleaner or Revo Uninstaller may be able to clear the files.

Temp files can cause issues too. Go to (I think) C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Temp and clear out all the files. Pretty much any folder in the AppData folder named Temp can be deleted.

Haven't tried installing in safe mode, cleaned out all temp files. The thing is, this is happening on 2 totally different PC's. Only thing in common is they both are running 32 bit Vista.

*EDIT* nope, no dice in safe mode.

"osetup.dll digital signature does not validate or is not present"

This part sounds really familiar. I seem to remember, when I had Vista, having to enable the installation of files not digitally signed with a recognizable vendor, or something like that. This was when I was trying to install some Chinese-knockoff wireless card drivers. I'm having trouble finding what that was all about though...

I assume you've ran the installer as administrator?

Edit: Nevermind. It turns out that "driver signing" is what I had messed with. Have you tried:

In my case I found that none of these actually fixed the problem, they only provided clues to the real issue. This error is due to the disc not being read correctly. Yes you can see the files on the disc just like you would expect, but they are not being transferred properly for some reason, and Windows is unaware of the problem and you therefore are also unaware of any problem until you receive this strange OSETUP.dll problem.

Yes ran it as admin, even tried adding the setup.exe to the DEP exception list. Plenty of people on Google are having this same problem, but I'm just not finding an answer that works for more than 1 person here and there.

While it is possible both PC's can't read the disc I don't know. And like I said I tried to copy the DLL from my office and same thing. Actually with my DLL I get the actual error message, with the original I just get the "program stopped responding" as soon as I run it.

Did you verify the media checksums? If they don't match the image is corrupt. Get checksums at the first link. Get Nirsoft's excellent hash app at the second link. It's fast, simple, and portable (no install required).

SHA1-MD5-Checksums-MSO 2010

When you said "Both have all the windows updates" do you also mean that they have SP1 installed as well? SP1 is a minimum requirement for installing MSO 2010 on Vista.
