Hi there,

I'm trying to install Firefox or Mozilla on my ancient Toshiba laptop (120 MHz/48 RAM, 1.3 GB HD)

The machine is running Win98, and I'm trying to avoid using IE6.

However, I can't get either alternative browser to actually work.

I downloaded Firefox, but if I launch the .exe file, the program will appear to be installin on the machine, but then it just disappears, and nothing's installed.

I tried Mozilla, the full browser, and while it does install the program (and add an icon on my desktop, which Firefox never gets to do), it's just as useless. I can click all day on that Mozilla icon, but nothing happens.

I tried several versions of both programs, downloaded from different servers - same result.

For the hell of it, I tried to install Opera on my laptop, and it works perfectly.

So what's wrong with the Mozilla family?

Weird. You might have to Update your Installer app, that's my guess anyway.

I tried to install Firefox on Windows 98 (not 98SE) and it wouldn't run the install either.

I have a last thing to try... There are some older versions of Firebird (pre-Firefox) which didn't come with an installer, - you just make a foldr and use the .exe file... I'll try them.

And I have to say I don't like the Opera interface... :(

Don't like the interface? What's there to like/dislike? It's a standard browser interface with an extra toolbar that hides away if you don't want it.

Just to add to my previous post: Check Microsoft's website for an Updated Installer. The Installer is part of Windows itself and was Updated some time ago.

Got it!

As I figured, simply downloading Firebird 0.7 and Firefox 0.8 was enough. No installer. Just place the folder in "Program files" and place a shortcut to the .exe file on the desktop... Excellent!

Why aren't there more programs like these? No installung/uninstalling... it just works!

Yep, I like it that a lot of the freeware programs that I use are available as a zip file, and no install is required.
