Can't install Java without Google Toolbar!

I needed to install Java so I can run Dimes. So I got to java.com to get the latest (6.x) JRE for IE. It starts the install, I uncheck "Install Goolge Toolbar" and shortly thereafter, I get an error dialog. Abort, Retry, Ignore. Installation fails. OK, fire up Firefox. Same thing. OK I download manual and install the Java SDK. Great. Now I try for the JRE for the browser, same results. Try again, this time I do not remove the check from the Google Toolbar box. Lo! and Behold! It installs. Is it just me?

You can't go to add/remove programs and just remove the Google Toolbar from there? If its there I seriously doubt it would take Java(not the hut) with it.

I've successfully installed the latest JRE without the Google Toolbar.

I've never had a problem with it either, but I have always downloaded the full offline install for the JRE and installed from that.

I realize I can uninstall the Google Toolbar. What was odd is that I could NOT install the Jave JRE with either IE or Firefox without also installing the Google Toolbar. Even downloading the offline version it would not install without an error. This is on a clean (about 1 week old) install of XP Pro.

It is now installed and working, and I have removed the Google Toolbar. I was just curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing. I notice more and more things are tied with Google's toolbar and Desktop search as well as Yahoo's Toolbar and other "BHOs."

Lots of software installers are really tricky and will install unwanted BHOs at the drop of a hat. I can't be sure if unchecking the Google Toolbar works or not, since I actually use the Google Toolbar (only because I want the PageRank function). I pretty much HATE add-on toolbars for I.E.
