Can't install dell network printer!! help

ok, here is the problem. We have dell multifunction laser 1600n network printer that is connected to the switch and the switch is connected to the router.

I know the ip address of the router and ip address of the network printer, but when I try to install the printer as a network setup in win XP using Dell setup software, it's not found!!. I try to setup dell tcp/ip utility by manually putting numbers for it, but no success. I tried router ip address and printer ip address. both didn't work to find the printer. What am I doing wrong???

Am I suppose to use router address to have access to the printer? or use printer ip address even though printer is connected to the router? if I use printer ip address, can it go through the router?

Maybe I shpuld enter router ip address and then maybe there is a software for the router that have a place to put network printer ip address...just not sure...

I'm very confused....

anyone with network printer experience, please help, thanks

Looks like I asked the question in a complicated matter...

Simply put, how can I make network printer work??? found on network...

can you ping the printer?

goto add printer / local printer untick automatically detect.

tick create a new port / select standard tcp/ip port / type its the ip address of the printer and then give the port a name.

when it askes for a driver show it to the cd.

that should be all

Regards

Allanv

PS: if you cant ping it you need to check the printers network settings

thanks you so much Allanv, your suggestion work perfect, I did not think about printer network setting...

thank you.....
