Can't install Asus Update after reinstalling XP

Odd one this. I did a complete reinstall of my system the other day and I'd like to flash my A8N-SLI's bios to the new official 1004 version (I've been running the 1005.001 beta version). I'd used Asus Update successfully before the reinstall but when I tried to install it nothing happens - when I double-click setup I get an hourglass for a few seconds then nothing happens - no error message, the installer just doesn't appear. This applies to the latest version of the installer I downloaded and the one on the CD that came with the mobo.
I know I can flash the bios in other ways but I'm curious to know why this isn't working - anyone have any ideas?

Use the DOS flash.

I've successfully flashed my BIOS to 1004 using DOS but I'm still curious about why the Asus Update installer won't even launch. I'm not having any trouble installing anything else and I've used Asus Update on this machine before. Just seems very weird.
